A series of accidents have occurred involving beachgoers impaled by umbrellas, most recently in New Jersey and in Ocean City, Maryland.
This hazard has the potential to turn a fun summer day into a catastrophe. The experts at Beach Umbrella Safety offer these tips to stay safe:
- anchor your umbrella
- make sure 18 to 24 inches of the umbrella pole are beneath the sand
- tilt the umbrella into the wind to prevent gusts from getting under the umbrella
- use your judgment: don’t use an umbrella if it’s windy
